Magnesium citrate

Magnesium citrate an over-the-counter laxative that is used to treat constipation.

 

This medicine is a liquid that comes in a bottle. It is a powerful laxative, so it is usually recommended only if a person is severely constipated. Magnesium citrate works by bringing extra water into your gut. It makes your stool looser and easier to pass. Make sure you drink enough water (at least 2 large glasses) when you take this medicine.

How do I take this medicine?

It is best to take magnesium on an empty stomach. Magnesium citrate has a strong taste, so drink it cold and through a straw.

Make sure to drink plenty of fluids (at least 2 large glasses) with each dose. You’ll probably notice you’ll feel thirsty after taking magnesium citrate, because this medicine draws water out of your body.

How long does it take to get relief?

Magnesium citrate takes between 30 minutes to 6 hours cause bowel movement.

Since magnesium citrate works quickly and sometimes causes cramping and diarrhea, it’s a good idea to be near a bathroom for several hours after taking it.

It is a powerful laxative and often makes people have large, watery bowel movements.

What are the side effects?

Magnesium citrate usually causes bloating, belly cramps, gas and diarrhea. These symptoms are expected, and usually go away after you have a good-sized bowel movement.

Call your care team if you have severe belly pain, diarrhea, vomiting or other side effects of magnesium citrate. They may suggest a different medication.
