Laxatives
Polyethylene glycol (Miralax)
Polyethylene glycol (Miralax®, or Purlax®) is a common over-the-counter laxative that is used to prevent and treat constipation.
It works by increasing the amount of water in your stool. This loosens the stool and makes it easier to pass.
Which one should I buy?
Miralax is sold in boxes of single-dose packets, or in larger bottles. Either is fine.
How do I take this medicine?
Mix the powder in 1 cup of liquid, stir, and drink it right away. You can use liquids like water, juice, coffee or tea.
-
If you are using Miralax from a bottle, use the measuring line on the bottle cap to measure a single dose of 17 grams (this is about 1 heaping tablespoon).
-
If you are using packets, each packet contains a single dose (17 grams).
You can take this medicine any time of the day. Some people prefer to take it at bedtime because it helps them have more consistent morning bowel movements.
This medicine is usually taken once or twice per day, depending on how severe your constipation is. Follow your doctor’s instructions. Unless your doctor has told you otherwise, it is usually safe to decrease or increase the dose of this medicine up to a maximum dose of 17 grams twice daily. This app will give suggestions on how often to take this medicine based upon your constipation symptoms.
How long does it take to get relief?
Everyone reacts to laxatives differently. Polyethylene glycol (Miralax) is a fairly “gentle” laxative. If you are constipated, it usually takes a day or two for this medicine to help you move your bowels.
What are the side effects?
The main side effects of this medication are bloating, gas, or loose stools. Less often, people may notice belly pain or cramps.
Bloating and cramps are usually worse when a person is very constipated. These side effects usually go away after a person has a good-sized bowel movement.
If you have severe belly pain, bloating or diarrhea, talk to your care team. They may suggest a different medication.
